I hope all the members who have never been to a local union meeting, (and many of you NEVER have in your whole postal career to date) will consider becoming more involved in the coming year. The point I want to make right now is that the local does not run by itself, nor does it run by the wishes of the officials. The local is fueled by the membership, all 135 members, but ONLY if they ATTEND MEETINGS to make motions, to give a second to other members' motions, and to vote "yes" or "no" to said motions which are won or lost by the majority vote. By not attending meetings you LOOSE YOUR VOICE, just as in the political arena if you do not vote for elected officials. One of the most precious rights we have as Americans is the fact that we are offered the opportunity to vote. Whether we take that opportunity or not also expresses another freedom....the freedom to ignore the voting opportunities and become VOICELESS. ONE member other than the officers were at the last meeting....that's pathetic. Yet the seven of us passed up an opportunity to accept an invitation and vote us all to go a Christmas party in New Jersey. The point is, we COULD HAVE made the motion, seconded it, and voted to go. But it was the responsible thing NOT to. You have the power to influence many things within our local, but you loose that power every time you find something better to do than attend a meeting where you can use your "voice". By the way, as a parting thought, I'm adding my name to this because I believe in what I say...and I'm not ashamed to say it. I do hope to see more of you, or all of you, at our next meeting in January.
