PPWU OFFICER RECOGNIZED FOR COMMITMENT TO LABOR
PPWU President Fran Friel has been named AFL-CIO
Labor Leader of the Week.
When Fran learned of the dispute between the Painters & Laborers
unions and the Double Tree Guest Suites he immediately took action.
Fran sought to resolve the differences between the parties, but once
he realized that was not possible he made the decision to move the
PPWU state convention to a different hotel. Fran's decision to
support solidarity and union brotherhood against a money grubbing,
scab hiring, low wage paying corporation has earned the respect of
labor leaders throughout Pennsylvania and the nation. The
Pennsylvania Postal Workers Union is proud to call Fran one of our
own and congratulates him on this great honor.

PPWU SAYS, "NO!"
TO SCAB WORKERS AND "YES!"
TO SOLIDARITY
The
PPWU made the decision to relocate its state convention
after the Doubletree Suites Hotel refused to settle a
dispute with the Painter and Laborers unions.
The hotel was undergoing renovations and management had been
busing in out-of-state, non-union workers at night, under
the cover of darkness paying them below standard wages.
The PPWU sought
to intervene on behalf of the painter and laborers unions,
and demanded the hotel negotiate a resolution to the
dispute. The PPWU was successful in getting the
parties to the table but all discussions were fruitless.
Management at the hotel refused to accede to the demands of
the unions who set up pickets outside the hotel.
In the spirit of solidarity the PPWU chose, at great
expense, to relocate the convention to another hotel.
The PPWU is steadfast in its assertion that it WILL NOT
cross a picket line! Members of the painter and
Laborers Union were invited to address the delegates at the
convention. they expressed their gratitude for the
PPWUs efforts.

PPWU OFFICERS ELECTED BY ACCLIMATION
The delegates at the PPWU Convention elected the
officers who will lead the state organization for the next
two years. Each of the PPWU offices was only one
candidate nominated, so each candidate was elected by
acclimation. All of the prior PPWU officers, with two
exceptions, were elected to serve another term in their
current position.
Central Area Business Agent Mickey Rozelle and Southeast
Area Business Agent Greg Burleigh did not seek re-election.
Those positions will be filled by Kim Miller of the Keystone
Area Local who will serve as Central ABA. Eastern
Montgomery County Area Local member Bob Miller was elected
to serve as Southeast ABA. The PPWU would
like to welcome its two newest officers and thanks the
outgoing officers for the time and effort they put forth on
behalf on the members.
